The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
As an employer you should be aware of and be adhering to the Fire Precautions (workplace) Regulations 1999.
At present any organisation with five or more employees must undertake an assessment of the fire risks in the same way as a company undertakes Health and Safety assessments to maintain a safe working environment.
The requirements include:
- The Provision of fire fighting & detection equipment.
- The provision of adequate means of escape.
- The production of an effective Fire Action Plan.
- The training of all staff - fire safety awareness.
- The training of fire wardens.
- The maintenance & recording of all provisions.
For England and Wales The Regulatory Reform Order (RRO) is expected to come into force in October 2006.
It will attempt to simplify, rationalise and consolidate all existing legislation. This new order will effect over 70 existing legislations either amending them or completely replacing them.
The fire Precautions (workplace) legislation 1997 & 1999(amended) are just two that will be completely replaced.
The RRO is a risk, based approach allowing more efficient and effective enforcement by the Fire and Rescue Service and other enforcing authorities.
This new reform will be risk assessment based with the responsibility for the fire safety of the premises and all its occupants resting upon a defined person.
Are you and your business ready for the changes?
